Katherine Boyer Waterston lahir pada tanggal 3 Maret 1980 di
Westminster, London, dia adalah putri dari orang tua Amerika, Lynn Louisa (née
Woodruff), mantan model, dan Sam Waterston, aktor nominasi Oscar. Adiknya
adalah aktris Elisabeth Waterston dan kakaknya adalah sutradara Graham
Waterston. Dia juga memiliki saudara tiri, James Waterston, juga seorang aktor. Dia lulus dari Loomis Chaffee School pada tahun 1998. Dia mendapatkan
gelar BFA-nya dalam akting dari Tisch School of the Arts di New York
University.
